第3章へはまた突入出来てません。ちっ。


※以下の解答は，ワタシのオレオレ解答なので，間違っていることに注意して下さい。

第2章過去問11

Our neighbor's dog is usually friendly, but when his master is around,
he barks loudly at me so that he tries to do his job as a
watchdog. But at the same time, he is wagging its tail as hard as if
he was telling me that he didn't mean it. So, I understand how
faithful he is and feel like patting him on the head, but I think I
had better not.

では，突っ込んでいきましょう。

  • 第1文
    • 犬の場合は，he で受けることが多いように思われるので，he にしとけば無難かなと。
    • so that ... --> so loudly at me that ...
      • なんや? ワシはボケとんのか? 初歩中の初歩の間違い。無念。
  • 第2文
    • he didn't mean it --> he didn't want to threaten me
    • mean it では，自分で読む限り，意味をつかみづらい。
    • あと，as hard as if でつなぐより，wagging its tail strongly and it looks as if ... とする方がいい気がする。
      • 「しっぽを激しく振る」の「激しい」にあてはまる単語が，strongly, hard くらいしか浮かばない。。無念。

第2章過去問12

Being intellectually honest means not pretending to know when you
really don't know. There are times when you think you understand
something but you are not aware that you don't, but you don't pretend
to know it, so you can make progress. On the other hand, when you
pretend to know and make a mistake, you can't make progress. After
all, it is only you that can tell whether you pretend or not, so as
Shakespeare said "Be honest to yourself," it is important not to
pretend to know anything.

これは，突っ込みがいがあり・・・，いやむしろ掲載することすら恥ずかしいレベルだ。
あぁ，無念。

  • 第1文
    • to know when you really don't know --> to know something when you really don't
      • 知ったかをしないだから，「何かを」を補ってあげるべきだし，基本，他動詞だし。
      • あぁ，恥ずかしい。
  • 第2文
    • understand --> know
      • なぜにいきなり，understand が出てくるかね。しかも今回は，something があるし。
    • but が連発して，何を言いたいかわからん。なので，以下のように修正するべき。意味的にも。
      • when you think you know something and you are not aware that you don't
    • you don't pretend --> you are not pretending to know ...
      • そのとき(when)に，知ったかをしていない，ので。たぶん現在形は無理。
  • 第3文
    • 前半はまだ許せる。か?
    • you can make progress ねぇ。仰々しい気がする。それに，人を主語にとらない気もする。
      • なので，you can learn something from it に。
  • 第4文
    • whether you pretend or not --> whether you are pretending or not
      • これも同様に，ある瞬間に知ったかをしているかどうか，なので進行形。
    • not to pretend --> not to try to pretend
      • 知ったかを「しないようにすること」，が大事だから。
    • anything --> something
      • 否定っぽいから，anything にしてみたけど，不自然。文法的にも間違いの部類な気が。
